Chapter Two Bookstore, nestled in the heart of downtown Redwood Falls at 120 East 2nd Street, is embarking on an exciting expansion that beautifully intertwines the city’s rich history with a passion for literature. Owner Joni (Nieland) Ogdie, a retired Redwood Valley High School chemistry teacher, is dedicated to restoring a historic building to its former glory while creating a welcoming space for book enthusiasts and the community.
A Building with a Storied Past
The expansion is taking place in what was once Gambles Hardware, a building with deep roots in the community, dating back to the late 1930s and 1940s. Originally, downtown Redwood Falls was divided into 40-foot lots, and Gambles combined two buildings into one, reflecting the growth and development of that era. Over the years, the space saw various uses, but now, under Joni's vision, it's being meticulously restored.
Joni’s commitment to preserving the building’s historic charm while updating it for a modern bookstore experience is evident in every detail. The renovation began by removing drop-down ceilings added over the years, revealing beautiful original details now being lovingly restored. From merging two buildings with different construction materials to repainting vintage ceiling tiles, every step honors the building's history while giving it new life.

About Gambles Hardware
The building’s past is tied to Gambles Hardware, part of the Gamble-Skogmo empire founded by Bertin Gamble and Philip Skogmo. Starting as an auto supply store in St. Cloud in 1925, Gambles expanded rapidly, reaching 1,500 dealers and 300 corporate stores across 24 states by 1939. At its peak, it was one of the largest retailers in the U.S. before being sold off in the 1980s, known for ventures like Red Owl and Snyder Drug stores.
For a glimpse into this rich history, the Redwood Falls Public Library, in collaboration with Gary Myrom, Gary Revier, and the Redwood County Historical Society, curated a photo collection showcasing the building’s legacy as Gambles Hardware.
About the Owner: Joni Ogdie
Joni Ogdie isn’t just the owner of Chapter Two Bookstore—she’s the heart and soul behind this incredible restoration journey. Her journey began even before she bought the bookstore in 2015. In 2014, she took a Community Education class taught by Don Yrjo, the former Redwood Valley Principal and Tech Education Educator, where she learned hands-on skills like building shelves. Her late husband played a crucial role in teaching her skills like plastering, guiding her through projects even when he was ill.
Joni’s love for the building and her commitment to the community are evident in every corner of Chapter Two. Her journey isn’t just about expanding a bookstore; it’s about preserving history and creating a welcoming space for all.

Restoring History, Creating Community
The expansion is more than just growing a bookstore—it’s about restoring history and celebrating community. Local businesses and craftspeople are integral to bringing Joni’s vision to life, ensuring every detail reflects the building’s rich past.

Joni’s Vision for the New Space
The community is in for a treat when the expanded Chapter Two Bookstore opens its doors! The new space will feature:
-
- Floor-to-Ceiling Bookshelves – Creating a cozy, immersive experience for readers.
- Reading Nooks – Three to four comfortable spots for readers to settle in, including one with a kids’ table and others with fun chairs (including two that spin!).
- Sitting Area – A welcoming space moving from the current store to the new addition, allowing for more room and better flow.
- Game Table and Demo Games – Adding a playful, interactive element to the store.
- Light, Open Atmosphere – With plants, natural light, and exposed brick adding to the charm.
- Meeting Room – A place for author signings, break room and more!
Everything in the new space will be thoughtfully reused and repurposed, maintaining the store’s warm, community-focused feel.

When Can We Visit the New Addition?
The new addition was purchased in May 2024, and Joni has high hopes for the space to open in Fall 2025. However, with a project of this scale and complexity, the timeline depends on everything coming together just right.
