A New Beginning for Redwood Falls: Farewell to Reede Gray Elementary
As Redwood Falls ushers in a new era of education with the completion of Redwood Valley Elementary School, the community prepares to say a heartfelt goodbye to a familiar landmark, Reede Gray Elementary. This summer, the long-anticipated demolition project begins, symbolizing progress while honoring the past.
Demolition Timeline and Safety Measures
Starting June 16, the first phase, abatement, will begin. This critical process, expected to last about three weeks, includes the safe removal of asbestos from the building. Demolition will follow in early July and is expected to be completed before the end of the month.
To ensure safety for surrounding residents and school community members, the demolition site, including the playground, is now entirely fenced off and inaccessible to the public. The building will be taken down in carefully controlled sections, mirroring the method used in the previous Wood Dale Nursing Home teardown. Should additional asbestos be discovered during the process, abatement efforts will resume before continuing with demolition.
Important Community Notice
The Reede Gray Elementary School site is now completely shut down for construction. This includes the playground! Please avoid the area for your safety and the safety of those working on-site.

Preserving History, Honoring Legacy
For many, Reede Gray Elementary represents cherished memories. To honor that legacy, bricks from the building will be made available to the public, much like what was done when the former high school was taken down. This offers a meaningful keepsake for those who attended, taught at, or simply admired the school’s role in the community.
While most of the structure will not be repurposed, items of historical and functional significance have already been salvaged. Over five large storage containers of materials will be relocated to the new Redwood Valley Elementary School. Key plaques and artworks, including beloved early childhood paintings, are being preserved for future decisions by the school board.
The Cardinal Spirit Lives On
Reede Gray wasn’t just a school, it was a second home to generations of Cardinals. From students turned teachers to staff, the legacy continues with heart and pride. This year, many of the staff once walked Reede Gray’s halls as students themselves.
As one teacher shared, “We had some good times here… We’re ready for you, Redwood Valley Elementary!”
Another reflected on the final walk-through, saying the halls were filled with stories, laughter, and memories of old students and friends.
After 45 years of teaching and subbing in the building, a longtime educator summed it up: “I didn’t think it would bother me but this building has been my second home… Lots of good memories within those walls.”
Looking Ahead
As construction continues on the new school and Reede Gray comes down, Redwood Falls celebrates a moment of transformation, one that respects our shared past while building a stronger foundation for the future of education in our community.
